We've had Schipperkes since 2006 and we started showing Schipperkes in 2019. We have taken our time, focused on learning as much as possible, and on developing a thoughtful and informed preservationist breeding program.
That is our primary goal and guiding light: breed preservation.
Every breed has things that make it unique and that make it stand out from other breeds - which when exemplified in a particular dog - make it easily identifiable because of those traits. We call this breed type. For our little black devils, breed type is a distinct silhouette that should make you go "a Schipperke!!!" from 100 yards away. It is the coat pattern, the foxlike face, the curious and watchful temperament, and so much more.
Without preservation breeders who care about breeding to the standard, our beloved breed can become generic and lose those unique features. Without careful stewardship, we can lose form, function, and the hardiness and longevity that the Schipperke is so well known for.
Preservation breeders preserve history.
Supporting preservation breeders means that you are helping keep the breed alive too - and not just any version of the breed - but the version that makes "those in the know" stop you and say "OMG, a Schipperke!" and makes everyone else point and stare and ask if it's a puppy or a bear cub.
- We are committed to breeding to the AKC standard for schipperkes.
- We are committed to breeding ethically with as much information about health and temperament as possible.
- We are committed to finding safe and happy homes for our puppies and retired adults.
- We are committed to taking back any puppy of our breeding if a new home doesn't work out. In fact, we insist that our buyers willingly and contractually agree to that. This is how we ensure schips of our breeding never end up in shelters.
- We partner with other preservation breeders who follow similar ethical standards.
- We belong to the following breed clubs and as members, we agree to their Code of Ethics:
- Schipperke Club of America
- Cascade Schipperke Club
- Schipperke Club of Southern California.
- We do health testing on our breeding adults and practice transparency with puppy buyers and breeding partners.
- We require a signed contract for all puppy buyers for the protection of the puppies we produce and so that all parties understand the terms of our placement agreement.
- We show our dogs in AKC conformation and value feedback from others as a means of avoiding "kennel blindness."
- We attend regional and national specialties to stay up to date with our breed.
- We use Puppy Culture and similar early neurological stimulation techniques to ensure appropriate puppy development.
- We expose our puppies to a variety of common household sights and sounds and people.
- We practice early litter training techniques so that puppies learn to keep their beds and personal space clean.
- We start crate training and travel training early.
- We follow appropriate deworming and vaccination protocols with our reproductive specialist vet.
